Bentonite in drilling - an essential industrial raw material
Bentonite is a clay mineral with unique thixotropic properties, key in oil and gas drilling, underground construction and geotechnics.
What is bentonite?
Bentonite is a clay rock composed mainly of montmorillonite. It is characterized by thixotropy, swelling in contact with water (up to 15× volume) and high plasticity.
Bentonite in drilling
Drilling fluids based on API Grade sodium bentonite are standard. They perform three functions: cooling the drill bits, bringing the spoil to the surface and sealing the walls of the drill hole.
Geotechnical applications
In underground construction, bentonite is used for diaphragm walls, sealing landfills and ground injections. Swelling guarantees almost zero permeability.
Other uses
- Founding: binder of the molding sand
- Food industry: clarification of wines and juices (E558)
- Cosmetics: ingredient of masks and powders
