Calcium chloride as a hygroscopic agent - warehouse applications

Calcium chloride absorbs moisture from the air more efficiently than silica gel. Learn about the uses of CaCl₂ as a moisture absorber in warehouses, transportation and industry.

May 8, 2026

Why is calcium chloride so hygroscopic?

CaCl₂ can absorb up to 6-7 times its weight in water. This happens by hydration: anhydrous CaCl₂ binds subsequent water molecules to form CaCl₂·2H₂O and then CaCl₂·6H₂O. The process is exothermic - it releases heat.

Use as a moisture absorber

  • Warehouses and halls: maintaining humidity below 60% RH prevents metal corrosion and mold
  • Container transport: CaCl₂ bags protect the cargo against the so-called "container rain"
  • Drying of industrial gases: in industrial installations as a cheap alternative to silica gel
  • Stabilization of dirt roads: absorption of water from the surface reduces dust

Comparison with other moisture absorbers

  • CaCl₂: high capacity, low cost, disposable
  • Silica gel: lower capacity, possibility of regeneration, more expensive
  • Molecular zeolites: highest selectivity, very expensive
