Calcium chloride for de-icing – why does it work better than NaCl?
Calcium chloride CaCl₂ is effective down to -52°C and reacts with ice exothermally. Find out why it is a better de-icing agent than traditional road salt.

Temperature limit – key difference
Road salt (NaCl) loses its effectiveness below –7°C. Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) works up to –52°C, which makes it irreplaceable in severe frosts.
Exothermic reaction
CaCl₂ releases heat upon contact with ice, accelerating its melting. NaCl absorbs heat from the surroundings - the opposite effect.
Dosage comparison
- NaCl: 15–30 g/m²
- CaCl₂: 10–20 g/m² - more effective at lower doses
When is it worth using CaCl₂?
- Temperatures below -7°C
- Preventive actions against rainfall
- Airports, highways, mountain areas
