What is kaolin?

Kaolin (white clay) is a clay rock composed mainly of kaolinite. It is distinguished by its white color, high melting point (1750°C) and chemical inertness.

Kaolin as a paper filler

Kaolin added to paper pulp (up to 30%) improves whiteness, surface smoothness, opacity and reduces production costs.

Kaolin for coating paper

In the production of coated paper, delaminated kaolin creates a smooth surface coating with an excellent barrier to printing inks - crucial in offset printing.

Quality requirements

  • ISO whiteness: ≥82% (filler), ≥86% (coating)
  • d50: ≤2 μm for delaminated kaolin
  • Fe₂O₃ content: ≤0.5%
