De-icing roads – salt, sand or chemicals?
Winter road maintenance involves choosing a de-icing method. Road salt, sand, calcium chloride - we compare effectiveness, cost and environmental impact.
Road salt (NaCl) – industry standard
Rock salt is the most widely used de-icing agent in the world. Effective down to approximately -10°C, the cheapest and best available. In standard winter conditions, road salt remains irreplaceable.
Calcium chloride (CaCl₂) – extreme frost
Effective below -30°C and with exothermic properties. The price is several times higher than NaCl and the aggressiveness towards concrete and metals limits its use to extreme cases.
Sand and aggregate
Sand does not de-ice - it only improves grip. Requires spring cleaning and clogs storm drains. Used as a salt supplement, especially on driveways and private parking lots.
Organic agents
Potassium acetate-based agents used in airports and near bodies of water where chlorides are prohibited. The price is many times higher than NaCl.
Application
In typical winter conditions in Poland, NaCl road salt is still the most economical and effective method. The key is precise dosing - oversalting the road increases costs and environmental pollution without improving the effect.
