Silica sand – applications in the glass and construction industry
High-purity SiO₂ silica sand is a key raw material for the glass, foundry, construction and filtration industries.
What is silica sand?
Silica sand is a mineral raw material with an SiO₂ content of over 90%, often 95-99.9% in high purity grades. A hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, high chemical resistance and melting point determine its wide industrial use.
Glass industry
Glass contains 70-74% SiO₂. Glass sand must meet stringent requirements: SiO₂ ≥99%, Fe₂O₃ <0.03% (colorless glass), granulation 0.1–0.5 mm.
Water filtration
Quartz sand with a fraction of 0.4–0.8 mm is used in pressure filters for the treatment of drinking and industrial water in accordance with the PN-EN 12904 standard.
Other uses
- Masonry mortars and plasters
- Moulding sands in foundry
- Silicate brick production
