What is ammonium nitrate?
Ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) is a white, granulated nitrogen fertilizer containing 34–35% nitrogen. Half of the nitrogen is in the ammonium form (slower action), half in the nitrate form (fast action). This two-form design determines exceptional effectiveness.
Advantages of fertilizing with saltpetre
- High N content (34-35%) - less material to transport
- Fast action of the nitrate fraction - visible effects in 7-14 days
- Ammonium fraction - slower release, lower risk of leaching
- Effective on acidic and alkaline soils
Dosage for selected crops
- Winter wheat: 80–120 kg N/ha in 2–3 doses
- Corn: 120–160 kg N/ha
- Rzepak: 140–180 kg N/ha
Safety regulations
Ammonium nitrate is regulated by Regulation (EU) 2019/1148 as regards explosives precursors. Purchases above certain limits require registration.
