Importing road salt from Egypt to the USA and Europe
What buyers should fix before the first container: grade, packaging, documents and who checks the cargo in Egypt.

Road salt is a seasonal commodity. The price on a quote is only useful if the cargo that arrives matches the spec you bought — and if it is still free-flowing after a sea voyage.
What to specify
For municipal and highway use in Europe, buyers usually ask for sodium chloride in line with EN 16811. Typical commercial points are NaCl content, grain size, moisture and an anti-caking agent. US buyers often write the same parameters into a purchase specification even when they do not cite the European standard by name.
- NaCl class (for example S1 / S2 under EN 16811)
- Grain size band and dust share
- Maximum moisture
- Packaging: 25 kg bags, big bags or bulk
- Incoterms and discharge port in the USA or Europe
Why origin in Egypt matters
Egyptian producers — state-owned and private — supply large winter volumes. The risk is not “Egypt” as such. The risk is loading a lot that was never sampled, or packing that does not survive humidity on the water.
